The cannabis component able to treat alopecia: CBD

Hair loss is a common problem that affects both men and women around the world. Androgenetic alopecia, also known as AGA, is a common form of hair loss that affects up to 50% of the population.

Although a definitive cure for this disorder has not yet been found, a recent study has revealed promising results on the potential of CBD for hair growth.

What is androgenetic alopecia?

It is a genetically predetermined disorder characterized by an excessive response to androgens. It can develop any time after puberty and primarily affects the scalp.

Although baldness is common worldwide, higher rates of male pattern baldness have been observed in countries such as Spain, the Czech Republic, France and the United States.

What studies support the effectiveness of CBD on alopecia?

A study recently published in the International Journal of Trichology has revealed the potential of CBD to promote hair growth in people with androgenetic alopecia.

The aim of the study was to determine whether daily topical application of a hemp oil with high concentrations of CBD, THCV and CBDV helped promote hair growth against alopecia.

A total of 31 individuals, both men and women, with androgenetic alopecia participated in this study. The participants applied a topical formulation of hemp extract once daily for six months.

Before and after treatment, the researchers counted the hairs in the areas most affected by alopecia and also assessed the participants’ psychosocial perception of improved “scalp coverage.”

Study results

The results of the study were very promising. All participants experienced some degree of hair growth after CBD treatment.

Growth ranged from 31.25% to 2000%, with the average increase being 246% in men and 127% in women. Importantly, no adverse effects were reported during the study.

In addition, participants rated their psychosocial perception of the treatment as “happy” or “very happy.” An independent review of scalp photographs showed improvements ranging from “mild” to “extensive.”

The study authors also noted that the topical hemp formulation was superior to oral finasteride, a common treatment for male pattern hair loss.

Mechanisms of action of CBD

The researchers noted that the hemp extract used in the study works through novel mechanisms that are different from both finasteride and minoxidil, another treatment used for alopecia.

This demonstrates that CBD and other cannabinoids present in hemp have a synergistic effect when combined with other conventional treatments.

It is a fact that the results of this study indicate that CBD could be a promising option for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia. All participants experienced significant hair growth without reporting adverse effects, which is a major positive factor.

If you are looking for a natural solution for hair loss, CBD is an option to consider. Be sure to always consult with a healthcare professional before beginning any treatment for alopecia.
